Cubs and Scouts roll up for a night of circus fun

Date: 5th Mar 2021 Author: Alex Hazle

The Cubs and Scouts of the 69th were in for a real treat on March 4 as Bristol-based Lucas Jet ran a Zoom-based circus skills workshop.

Despite the obvious constraints of performing skills from his home and not the big top, Lucas had everyone in stitches with his sense of humour (but no clowning around). He then wowed them with juggling tricks and sleight-of-hand magic.

But the tricks weren’t confined to Lucas (or people with professional kit). He showed everyone how to juggle with pairs of socks, flip a baseball cap from their hand to their head, balance a broom on their finger and use toilet rolls for ‘cigar box’ flips and catches. Soon all the Cubs and Scouts were showing off their own skill and dexterity.

Like many performers and professionals more used to face-to-face workshops in schools and church halls, Lucas has been packing in the virtual sessions, but his enthusiasm and energy even after back-to-back Zooms was impressive, and the breadth of tricks he achieved from home was amazing – though riding a super-high unicycle in a room with a close-up webcam did present its challenges!

For anyone who missed our session, there’s more from Lucas on Saturday, March 6 in a free charity event on Zoom. Event details are here on Facebook if you can make it.
