Cubs take the outdoor challenge

Date: 1st Jun 2025 Author: jenny stephens
Our cubs have been working hard on their Outdoor Challenge award this spring.
Successful completion requires them to complete some camps out, be able to put up a tent, keep themselves safe and know how to take care of kit. Taking part in a campfire singalong, cooking over the fire and building some gadgets are all part of the fun too.
Cleeve Hill provided a beautiful Friday evening.  The cubs efforts to get the site prepared- pitching tents, lighting a fire and so on were soon rewarded with hot dogs around the fire. Our Youth Trustee joined to meet everyone, too.
After a surprisingly chilly night, we enjoyed a feast for breakfast and then our Young Leaders took over the show. Young Leaders are teenagers who have grown up in Scouting, and then progress to Explorers with friends from across the City. As part of this, some of them return to the younger sections to help out, and develop their own skills. They bring amazing ideas, energy and act as excellent role models to Cubs.
They lead the cubs in pioneering – using lashings and poles to create all sorts of structures: starting small, working on learning the knots and then creating some fun shapes.
After more food and more singing, everyone went home with lots of stories to share. Thanks to all our volunteers for running this event.
