Exploring local landmarks

Date: 7th Feb 2025 Author: jenny stephens

Being based in Weston, Beckford’s Tower is a constant landmark for us. It glints in the sunlight and we orient ourselves against it on some of our hikes.

This week however, we went inside, to explore the tower.

The Beavers were sent on a scavenger hunt through the collections to learn about William Beckford and his collection. We all marvelled that the only people richer than him at the time were the Royal Family. We tried to read his handwriting and looked at all the valuable curiosities he collected.

We counted the stairs to the top of the tower, and tried to spot different Bath landmarks and our homes , enjoying the view.

We thought about what makes a tall tower stand up, and tried to make the tallest towers we could out of paper straws – with some impressive results, both in height and stability ( though not necessarily at the same time!)

And finally, we explored the cemetery with its old stones and interesting patterns.

Massive thanks to Marie at the Bath Preservation Trust, who put together a fantastic programme for us.  We’re planning to build on this next term – thinking about collections for our collectors badge and continuing to think about using landmarks in our local area for navigations.
